Another busy BNI Surrey Hills meeting showed exactly why successful networking is about far more than simply exchanging business cards.
With members and visitors representing businesses from across Surrey, Croydon and South London, the meeting was packed with introductions, referral opportunities, business advice and examples of members actively helping one another grow.
Networking That Produces Real Results
One of the strongest themes from the meeting was the value of building trusted relationships.
Jamie Harkness of Professional Roof Cleaning reported that around £40,000 of work had been generated from referrals within the group over the previous two months.
That is a powerful example of what can happen when a network understands what its members do and actively looks for opportunities for them.
There were plenty of other examples throughout the meeting.
Jon Skinner of Glow Homes spoke about several solar projects currently underway, including two projects worth around £600,000–£650,000, and asked members for introductions to local businesses that could benefit from commercial solar installations.
Meanwhile, Marc Barker of M.E.B Vehicle Services highlighted a very specific referral opportunity: owners of Ford Transit vans approaching 70,000–80,000 miles.
Changing the wet belt at the right time could potentially prevent an engine failure and a repair bill of around £4,000.
That is exactly the type of specific referral request that makes BNI work.
Members Helping Members Get Found
The meeting also included a reminder that referrals do not always have to involve introducing a new customer.
Members were encouraged to leave Google reviews for Dan Hussey of DH Tree Services and James Buckett of Clear it.
A genuine Google review can continue helping a business for years, improving its credibility when future customers research the company online.
It is effectively a long-term digital referral.
A Huge Range of Businesses Under One Roof
One of the advantages of BNI Surrey Hills is the diversity of expertise within the chapter.
During the meeting we heard from businesses covering health, property, construction, finance, marketing, travel, HR and professional services.
Maria Millward of HRoverload encouraged businesses planning to recruit to think carefully about their HR procedures and probation processes.
Ryan Penedo of C4 Plus Drainage reminded members that the company provides both emergency and planned drainage services, making estate agents, facilities managers and property managers particularly useful introductions.
Jo Suleyman of TRUST Building Services was equally specific about the work she wants.
Rather than small maintenance jobs, TRUST is looking for clients wanting complete kitchen refurbishment projects.
James Buckett of Clear it is looking for more residential and commercial clearance work, while Michael Walker of RLR Leadwork and Roofing reminded homeowners about the importance of using trusted roofing contractors, particularly following periods of bad weather.
Visitors Bring Even More Opportunities
The meeting also welcomed a strong selection of visitors representing additional industries.
These included plumbing and heating, domestic air conditioning, scaffolding, electrical services, locksmithing, IT and security, surveying, video production, commercial property law, AI and technology, fire protection and brickwork.
Visitors were encouraged to explain exactly who they wanted to meet.
Ashley from A1 Heating and Plumbing, for example, was looking for introductions to landlords and letting agents.
Joe Brooks of Brooks and Birch Films wanted introductions to events managers and venues and offered to create a complimentary video for suitable venues as a way of demonstrating what his company could produce.
Newmax Fire & Security was looking for introductions to building managers, schools and care homes, while Sam Holdcroft of Holdcroft Constructions wanted to meet builders, property agents and maintenance companies requiring brickwork.
This ability to quickly connect businesses with relevant people is one of the biggest advantages of structured networking.
Referrals Work Best When You Are Specific
Throughout the meeting, members repeatedly demonstrated one of BNI’s most important principles:
The more specific the request, the easier it is for someone to help you.
Rather than asking for “anyone who needs marketing”, Smart Cow Marketing asked specifically for introductions to electricians, builders and plumbers looking to generate more enquiries.
Smart Cow’s advertising campaigns have now generated millions of advert views and thousands of customer enquiries, demonstrating how targeted digital advertising can help local businesses get found when customers are actively searching for their services.
Similarly, Louise Long of The Dylan Strong Foundation had one particularly important request.
The charity would like an introduction to someone within the catering department at the Royal Marsden Hospital, as part of its work supporting children with cancer and campaigning for better nutritional support.
One connection within the room could potentially open that door.
Building Relationships Before You Need Them
BNI is sometimes described simply as a referral organisation, but the real value comes from the relationships behind those referrals.
Members meet every week.
They learn about each other’s businesses.
They understand the type of customers their fellow members want.
And, importantly, they build enough trust to confidently recommend each other.
That trust cannot be created from a quick exchange of business cards at an occasional networking event.
It comes from consistency.
The meeting also included news that a new chapter leadership team will take over in October, continuing the development of what has already become a highly collaborative group.
